Mayor presents Adaptive Re-Use Project of the Year Award to Community Smith for “Superblock”

“The Greenville business community, the university community and the medical community came together Tuesday evening for a celebration of the recent positive development in the downtown area at an event billed the State of the District

The reception and presentation was sponsored by the Uptown Greenville Association and featured a presentation about the importance of a successful downtown area by the interim provost of East Carolina University and an award presentation by the mayor of Greenville

Uptown Greenville Association Chairman Tony Khoury welcomed a crowd of more than 180 at the Martinsborough banquet room in the Jefferson’s building downtown.  Khoury told the crowd of community leaders and stakeholders how important the recent development in the downtown area has been.  “Every community needs to have a vibrant center city”, Khoury said in his opening remarks.  “The spotlight is on Greenville now because of ECU, Vidant Health and our great football team”.

Uptown Greenville Director Bianca Shoneman shared the recent success of the district in a slide presentation that highlighted projects such as the new student housing project being developed by local businessmen Tom Taft and Jim Ward.  The Boundary at West End is expected to be complete in time for the 2015 fall semester and will house over 450 ECU students.

ECU Interim Provost Dr. Ron Mitchelson made a presentation entitled “A Central Place Matters- Rethinking Urban Geography” which emphasized the need for a vibrant downtown area in the fabric of a successful city.

Mayor Allen Thomas concluded the event by presenting five awards including a special award to Greenville Businessman Don Edwards whose vision has long been the driving force of rebuilding the downtown district.  Edwards received a standing ovation from the appreciative crowd.
